Country and Western music has its roots in the blues, spirtuals and folk music. First becoming big in the Southeast in the 20's, Country and Western music found its way into the American lexicon. The Grand Ole Opry has featured country and western bands and singers since 1925 with its broadcast since 1925, making it one of the longest running in the history of broadcasting. While it generally was seen as an offshoot of more popular forms of entertainment, the 60's saw an explosion in country music making it a multi-million dollar industry with its own stars, glamor and following.

Over the years, the industry has continued to evolve. The once soulful tunes of love lost and national depression have given way to pop offshoots and mass appeal. With such cultural icons as John Travolta in Urban Cowboy, Sandra Bullock in The Thing Called Love, and even Sylvester Stallone in Rhinestone, partaking in this world, general audiences began accepting country and western music. The world of Patsy Cline, Gene Awtry and Johnny Cash has given way to Willie Nelson, the Judds, Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, the Judds, LeAnne Rimes, Shania Twain, Martina McBride and Faith Hill. Alabama and The Oak Ridge Boys have achieved popularity for years, and The Dixie Chicks have even become something of a pop icon for their political leanings.

Because of the roots of Country and Western music, the lyrics portray a more grass roots picture of Americana that other popular art forms, with the failures and successes of everyday living providing the fodder for the emotional backdrop of the music.
